Electric motor

An electric motor turns electricity into motion. Michael Faraday demonstrated the principle in 1821. Ányos Jedlik, a native of Zemné in southern Slovakia, built the first rotary motors around 1827 and 1828, and Moritz Jacobi built the first practically usable motor in 1834.

Jedlik from Zemné

The Benedictine monk and physicist Ányos Jedlik was born in 1800 in the village of Zemné near Nové Zámky. He built a small electromagnetic rotary motor and also came up with the principle of the self-excited dynamo. He never patented his discoveries, though.

Tesla

Nikola Tesla invented the AC induction motor, which has no brushes and lasts for decades. Motors like this drive washing machines, fans, lifts and many electric cars.

Motors everywhere

There is an electric motor in every computer fan, in a hard drive, in a drone, in an electric toothbrush and in a train. Modern permanent-magnet motors are more than 90% efficient.
