Graphics for gamers
NVIDIA nearly went bankrupt with its first chip, but with its RIVA and GeForce cards it took over the gaming market. It was NVIDIA that popularised the term GPU, see The graphics card (GPU).
A bet on computing
Jensen Huang invested in CUDA even though it brought no profit for years. When it turned out that neural networks train best on GPUs, NVIDIA was ready. Its data-centre chips are now the foundation for training language models.
Gamers and prices
The RTX gaming cards brought ray tracing and DLSS. Because the company earns most of its money from AI, gamers complain about high card prices. The memory shortage in 2026 pushed them even higher.
