1984Microchip and the PC

Apple Macintosh

The Macintosh from January 1984 was the first successful computer for ordinary people with a graphical interface and a mouse. Instead of typing commands, you clicked icons and windows.

The “1984” ad

The Macintosh was launched with Ridley Scott's famous Super Bowl commercial inspired by George Orwell's novel. The computer was portrayed as a rebel against grey corporate uniformity.

What it brought

  • A graphical interface with windows, icons and a trash can.
  • The mouse as the main input.
  • Quality fonts and printing, which later sparked the desktop publishing revolution.

Mac today

After Steve Jobs returned came the iMac (1998) and Mac OS X (2001), built on Unix. Since 2020 Macs have used Apple's own Apple Silicon chips.
