Robots

The word robot comes from Czech. Karel Čapek used it in his 1920 play R.U.R., but it was invented by his brother Josef. The first industrial robot, Unimate, started work in a General Motors factory in 1961.

From robota to robot

Josef Čapek derived the word from “robota”, meaning forced labour. In the play R.U.R., artificial people rise up against their creators. The word spread into every language in the world.

Robots in factories

Industrial robots weld, paint and assemble cars, including in Slovak car plants. They are precise, never get tired and work where it is dangerous for people.

Humanoids

Companies such as Boston Dynamics show robots that run, jump and do somersaults. With the rise of artificial intelligence, several companies are developing humanoid robots for warehouses and homes. For now they are expensive, and in homes their place is taken by simpler robot vacuum cleaners.
