Supercomputers

A supercomputer is the most powerful computer of its time. The first was the CDC 6600 by Seymour Cray from 1964. Today's fastest machines manage more than a quintillion operations per second and compute weather, climate and artificial intelligence.

Cray

Seymour Cray designed the fastest computers from the 1960s to the 1980s. The Cray-1 from 1976 had a distinctive shape with a bench around it, and the cooling was hidden underneath.

Today

Modern supercomputers have tens of thousands of processors and graphics cards linked by a fast network. In 2022 the American Frontier broke the exaflop barrier. Europe is building its own supercomputers under the EuroHPC programme.

What they are for

Weather forecasting, simulations of nuclear reactions, drug development, space research and training artificial intelligence.
