From mod to legend
Two students made a mod that was better than many full games. Valve bought it in 2000. Version 1.6 from 2003 was played in every internet café. CS: Source (2004), CS:GO (2012) and Counter-Strike 2 (2023) followed.
How it plays
- Two teams of five, first to 13 rounds wins.
- You earn money each round and buy weapons, so the economy drives tactics.
- Maps such as de_dust2, Mirage and Inferno are known by heart by every player.
CS2 and your own servers
Counter-Strike 2 runs on Source 2 and introduced a sub-tick system that records the exact moment of a shot between server updates. The community still runs its own servers with mods, plugins (for example via Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp) and custom maps. Such a server can even run at home in Docker on a NAS.
