Priest and scientist
Murgaš studied painting and theology. As priest of the Slovak community in Pennsylvania he had a laboratory in his parish house. Instead of dots and dashes his system sent tones of different pitch, which could speed up the transmission of messages.
Demonstration and bad luck
Murgaš publicly demonstrated signal transmission between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. He planned bigger experiments, but a storm destroyed his antenna and the money ran out. Competing with Marconi and big companies was impossible for an individual.
For Slovakia
Murgaš supported the creation of Czechoslovakia and the Pittsburgh Agreement. He returned to Slovakia after 1918, later settled in America again and died there in 1929. There is a memorial room dedicated to him in Tajov, and several awards of Radio and Television of Slovakia bear his name. See also Radio.
