Radio

In 1895 Guglielmo Marconi began sending signals without wires, and in 1901 he bridged the Atlantic. Nikola Tesla, Alexander Popov and the Slovak Jozef Murgaš were working on wireless transmission at the same time. Wireless telegraphy later grew into radio broadcasting.

Who invented radio?

There is no simple answer. Marconi had the commercial success and a Nobel Prize (1909). Tesla held key patents, and in 1943 a US court struck down some of Marconi's patents in Tesla's favour. Popov demonstrated a receiver in Russia. Jozef Murgaš developed his own “tone system” and was granted US patents in 1904.

Broadcasting

Dots and dashes gave way to voice and music. The first radio stations went on air in the 1920s. In Slovakia regular broadcasting began in 1926 from Bratislava.

Radio everywhere

Wi-Fi, mobile phones, Bluetooth, GPS and remote car keys are all radio technologies. All of them build on discoveries made more than a hundred years ago.
