The keyboard: from typewriter to mechanical switches

The key layout we use today comes from Christopher Sholes's typewriter, patented in 1868. The computer keyboard inherited it, and it has survived everything from terminals to touchscreens.

Why QWERTY

According to a widespread explanation, the letters were arranged so that frequently used pairs would not jam in the machine's mechanism. More efficient layouts such as Dvorak exist, but habit is stronger.

The Slovak layout

The Slovak keyboard uses QWERTZ, meaning Y and Z are swapped compared with the English one, and the top row holds letters with diacritics (ľ, š, č, ť, ž, ý, á, í, é). Programmers often switch to the English layout because of the brackets.

Mechanical keyboards

Each key has its own switch with a spring. They are more durable and more precise, and gamers and programmers love them for the way typing feels. Switches are divided into linear, tactile and “clicky”.
