Washing day
Before washing machines, clothes were scrubbed by hand on a washboard, and water had to be carried in and heated on the stove. Doing a family's laundry took a whole day, and it was mostly women's work. The electric washing machine freed up their time for paid work and education, which economists link to the social changes of the 20th century.
Tatramat
For decades, Tatramat washing machines were made in Poprad, and they could be found in many homes across Czechoslovakia. The plant now belongs to Whirlpool and makes washing machines for a large part of Europe.
Smart washing machine
Modern washing machines weigh the laundry and dose water and detergent accordingly. Inverter motors are quieter and more economical. A water sensor under the machine, connected to your smart home, will send you an alert if something leaks.
