A rough start
The first Galaxy Fold review units broke within days, because some reviewers peeled off a protective film that was part of the display. Samsung delayed the launch and changed the design. Each generation since has been thinner and tougher.
Book and clamshell
- Book (Galaxy Z Fold, Google Pixel Fold, iPhone Duo) opens into a small tablet.
- Clamshell (Galaxy Z Flip, Motorola Razr) is small when folded, like phones from twenty years ago.
- Huawei has also shown phones that fold twice (tri-fold).
Weak points
The fold is still more delicate than glass, there is often a visible crease in the middle, and repairs are expensive. Foldables are still only a few percent of smartphone sales, but the iPhone Duo may shake up the market.
