The garage and the Apple II
Wozniak designed the Apple I computer, and Jobs knew how to sell it. The Apple II from 1977, with colour graphics, was one of the first personal computers sold to the mass market.
Fall and return
Jobs had to leave the company in 1985. Apple struggled and in 1997 was close to collapse. Jobs came back, and the iMac, the iPod (2001), the iPhone (2007) and the iPad (2010) followed.
Today
Apple designs its own Apple Silicon chips and sells services and hardware tied together into one ecosystem. In 2026 John Ternus, until then head of hardware engineering, took over the company from Tim Cook.
