Cloudflare and CDNs

Cloudflare is a company that sits in front of millions of websites, speeding them up and protecting them from attacks. It launched in 2010, and today a significant share of all web traffic flows through it. This website runs through Cloudflare too.

What a CDN is

A Content Delivery Network stores copies of a website on servers around the world. A visitor in Košice gets the page from the nearest server, not from the other side of the world. The page loads faster and the origin server has less work.

Protection against attacks

In a DDoS attack a website is flooded with fake requests from thousands of devices. Cloudflare filters them out before they reach your server.

Cloudflare Tunnel

A tunnel lets you publish a website running at home without opening ports on your router. A small program on the server connects out to Cloudflare, and visitors come in through it. That is how this site runs on a home NAS.

When it goes down

Because so much of the web uses Cloudflare, its outages are visible everywhere. In November 2025, for example, a fault took down many well-known services for a few hours. That is the price of a centralised internet.
