The camera in your phone

The first mass-produced camera phone, the Sharp J-SH04, came out in Japan in 2000 and took 0.1-megapixel photos. Today phones have replaced compact cameras, and software decides photo quality.

Selfies with a mirror

The Sharp had a small mirror next to the lens so you could take a self-portrait. Photos could be emailed. Camera phones spread in Europe around 2003.

Computational photography

A phone's small sensor cannot capture as much light as a large camera. Phones solve it in software: when you press the shutter they take a burst and merge it. That is how HDR, night mode and portrait background blur work. In 2018 Google showed Night Sight, which could shoot in near-total darkness.

The end of compacts

Compact camera sales fell sharply after 2010. The best camera is the one you have with you. The history of photography since the daguerreotype is in Photography.
