Air conditioning and the heat pump

Modern air conditioning was born in 1902, when Willis Carrier designed a system that controlled the temperature and humidity in a printing works in Brooklyn so the paper would not curl. Today the same principle, run in reverse, heats homes as a heat pump.

Not for people, but for paper

Carrier's goal was to keep the colours aligned when printing. That it pleasantly cooled people was a bonus. In the 1920s cinemas lured audiences with “cooled air”, and the phenomenon of the summer blockbuster was born.

The heat pump

An air conditioner takes heat from a room and dumps it outside. A heat pump does the opposite: it takes heat from the outside air, even in freezing weather, and delivers it into the house. From one kilowatt-hour of electricity it produces three to five kilowatt-hours of heat.

Smart control

Air conditioners and heat pumps can be controlled through Home Assistant, for example switching cooling on only when the sun is shining and the solar panels are producing.
