1901Age of electricity

The vacuum cleaner

The first motorised vacuum cleaner was built by Hubert Cecil Booth in London in 1901. It was so big that it was pulled by horses, and the hoses were fed into the house through a window. Today's vacuum cleaners are cordless, and many clean on their own.

Horses outside the house

Booth saw a machine that blew dust away, and it occurred to him that sucking it up would be better. His machine stood on a cart outside the house. Cleaning became a social event that the neighbours came out to watch.

Hoover

The caretaker James Murray Spangler was allergic to dust and built a light vacuum cleaner with an electric motor. William Hoover bought the patent, and in English people still say “to hoover” for vacuuming.

Dyson and robots

James Dyson reportedly made more than five thousand prototypes before he came up with the bagless cyclone vacuum cleaner. Today robot vacuums take over part of the work.
