Slovak flying cars

Slovak designer Štefan Klein has been working on flying cars for decades. In June 2021 his AirCar flew from Nitra airport to Bratislava airport, landed, folded its wings and drove into the city centre. Before that he also created the well-known AeroMobil.

AeroMobil

AeroMobil began as a joint project of Štefan Klein and Juraj Vaculík. The 3.0 prototype was presented in Vienna in 2014 and caught the world's attention. During a test flight in 2015 the machine crashed; Klein saved himself with the rescue parachute. The company went on to develop further versions.

AirCar

Klein later founded the company KleinVision and built the AirCar. The wings and tail retract in less than three minutes, turning the aircraft into a car. After the flight from Nitra to Bratislava in 2021, the machine received a certificate of airworthiness from the Slovak Transport Authority. The technology was later licensed abroad as well.

The future

Flying cars are not a mass-market thing yet. The driver needs a pilot's licence, and take-off has to be from an airport. Electric vertical take-off air taxis (eVTOL) are being developed in parallel. Here, though, Slovakia follows on from the tradition of Banič and Bahýľ.
