PoE: power over the network cable

PoE (Power over Ethernet) carries both data and power over a single network cable. A camera, Wi-Fi access point or IP phone therefore needs no power socket. The first standard came out in 2003.

Why it is practical

A camera under the roof or an access point on the ceiling needs just one cable. When the PoE switch is connected to a UPS, the cameras keep recording even during a power cut.

What to keep in mind

  • Add up the power draw of all devices and compare it with the PoE switch's power budget.
  • Cameras with illumination and heating need more power.
  • Some manufacturers' passive PoE is not compatible with the standard and can damage devices.
