From Didaktik to Steam
The first Slovak game makers started out on ZX Spectrum and Didaktik computers in the 1980s. Games were spread on cassettes and in magazines. After 1990 the first professional studios appeared.
Studios
- Cauldron (Bratislava) created the turn-based strategy game Spellcross and the shooter Chaser, and later worked on many games for foreign publishers.
- Games Farm (Košice) released the Air Conflicts flight series and the action RPG Vikings: Wolves of Midgard.
- Pixel Federation (Bratislava) makes free-to-play games for millions of players.
- More and more independent teams release games on Steam and consoles.
Where to start
Slovak universities are opening study programmes focused on game development, and events such as game jams take place. All you need is an engine such as Unity, Unreal or Godot (see Game engines) and the will to do it.
