Access control systems

An access control system replaces keys with cards, tags, codes or a fingerprint. You can set exactly who may enter where and when, and a lost card is easily blocked. The widely used MIFARE cards appeared in 1994.

Advantages over keys

  • A lost card is blocked, so there is no need to change the locks.
  • Entry can be limited by time, for example only during working hours.
  • The system records who came in and when, and can also be used for attendance tracking.

Card security

Old cards with a fixed number are easy to copy. Modern cards use encryption. When choosing a system, it matters that both the reader and the cards support secure protocols.

Integration

An access control system can be linked to an alarm (arriving disarms it), cameras and a smart home.
