The dishwasher

The first practical dishwasher was patented by Josephine Cochrane in 1886. Supposedly because her servants kept breaking her precious china while washing up. Her company later became part of the KitchenAid brand.

China kept safe

Cochrane designed wire compartments for plates and cups, onto which hot water was sprayed. The first customers were hotels and restaurants. Households lacked hot running water, so dishwashers only made it into homes later.

Does it save water?

A modern dishwasher uses around 10 litres of water for a whole cycle. Washing up by hand under running water often uses more. It pays to run it full and on an eco programme.
